Career vs. Job – What’s the Difference?

Career vs. JobIt’s very common for people to think of a job and a career as the same exact thing. While there may be some similarities, such as both are done for monetary gain, the truth is there is a distinct discrepancy between the two.

Job
Simply put, a job is a short-term activity and is only done when a person requires money to live. There are also many different types of jobs as well including full-time, part-time, temporary, and self-employment. Also, when people are unhappy with their current job, they tend to just go out and get another one. Job hours also differentiate as some may only take an hour and others a significant amount of time such as 10 or 11 hours. A job is also only part of a career and has a very small impact on the person’s daily life.

Career
Where a job is short-term, a career usually lasts the entirety of one’s life. It requires specialized studies, training and or formal education. This is something that you won’t be doing for a small amount of time but something you love and enjoy and want to do for the rest of your working career. If you stick with your career, you could also potentially be able to cause social change in your field where as a job you probably won’t be around long enough to make an impact.

Truck driving is a great example of a career because when you are a truck driver, you are often extremely dedicated and enjoy what you do. Rather than being chained to a desk all day, you’re able to travel the country and constantly be on the go. There is always demand for truck drivers, so it will be able to provide you with stability and peace of mind for the entirety of your career.
