How Has the COVID-19 Pandemic Affected Truck Drivers?

Truck Driver During COVID-19 Outbreak The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the entire world. The global economy has come to a near halt and even more tragically, there have already been (as of this writing) over 62,000 deaths worldwide and over 8,000 deaths here in the United States as the result of the coronavirus.

Put simply, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected all walks of life. For many businesses, they have been forced to either temporarily close or work remotely from home to help stem the spread of the virus. That however is not an option for truck drivers, since the industry is deemed and is of course, an essential service. So how has the pandemic affected truck drivers?

COVID-19 And The Truck Driving Industry

Well for starters, truck drivers are finding a major disruption to their routines. For example, one’s favorite diner in a given location on the road is likely either temporarily closed or only offering takeout. Similarly, stopping at a gas station or convenience store may be much different than drivers are used to, as in some locations, the only way to grab snacks and coffee is to patiently wait outside while an employee grabs your things. What’s more, some stops for sleeping may be empty, or others may be full…it’s all a fluid process.

Next, the stress of having to work while simultaneously working to not catching the virus is challenging. While out on the road, who knows what types of germs drivers are exposed to…which can make it a bit challenging to come home to your family as you fear you may passing on something to them while they’re isolated and practicing social distancing. Of course, truck drivers are a tough and resilient group, and realize how vital the job is right now, especially those transporting essential supplies, such as hand sanitizers, soaps and wipes.

What Can Drivers Do To Stay Healthy and Safe

The most important things truck drivers can do is stay home and isolate if you’re feeling sick. When on the road and out of the rig, try to stay at least 6 feet away from others. What’s more, make sure to wash your hands frequently, or use hand sanitizer. And of course, use wipes or other disinfectant products on commonly touched surfaces.

A HUGE thanks to all the truck drivers who are out on the road right now, continuing to make sure people get the things they nee during these difficult times.
